A resident charity event in Whitworth has raised over £1000 for Macmillan Cancer support and boosted community spirit in the area.
We supported the event and Neighbourhood Officer, Louise Clawson, who was with residents on the day, tells us all about it.
Louise said, “The Macmillan Coffee morning, ran superbly by Edgemoor estate resident Lorraine Hammonds, was a huge success, raising a whopping £1072 for this fantastic cause. Lorraine organised the event in memory of her late husband Peter, whom she sadly lost to lung cancer and who would have turned 60 the day before the coffee morning.
It was a wonderful day, with our Rossendale weather throwing all the elements at us, all of it taken in the stride of our brilliant Edgemoor residents, who turned out in droves to support the event and to sample the wares on offer. The residents borrowed a couple of gazebos to add to the two already there and, right on cue, the rain stopped, the sun came out and so did lots of residents. They then got to try their luck on the tombola and raffle, with most people winning a prize as so many had been donated.
Visitors enjoyed a range of delicious food from a slice of delicious cake and a cuppa, to a tasty burger and hot dog. Everyone had the chance to sit down with neighbours and have a good chat and a catch up. All the stalls had a successful day as well, with just a few slices of cake left at the end which were given to children.
Well we had rain, we had sun and we certainly had lots of fun as the residents came together to raise lots of money for this fabulous cause. A wonderful example of the power of community, I was proud to be the representative of Together Housing supporting the estate on the day.
A huge thanks to all the residents who came along, and of course to Lorraine for organising and running the Coffee Morning, ably assisted by Karen, Susan, Debbie, Mark, Andrea, Joanne and Dave who ran the stalls. They all did a sterling job raising the money for charity, boosting community pride and bringing people together after the isolation of Covid. An event like this was just what we all needed right now.”
Dave Motley, Neighbourhood Coordinator, said, “What a fantastic cause and brilliant event, this just shows what a community can do when we all work together to create positive things. Together Housing are proud to be able to support residents with this type of event.”
