A couple in Harrogate have been able to move into their dream home thanks to shared ownership.
Caroline, 56, and Colin Waddington, 64, have always lived in Harrogate and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. Since 2009 the couple rented privately, but they were paying on average £1000 per month on rent and were unsure how they would continue to afford this when they retired.
According to the National Housing Federation, in 2019 the average house price for a home in Harrogate was £353,121 with private rent costing 33% of a single person’s income a month.
They began to consider other options and found out about shared ownership. Shared ownership allows those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford to buy on the open market the chance to part-buy and part-rent.
Caroline said, “In 2019 we noticed that new houses were being built around Harrogate and we began to consider the option of shared ownership. We already had savings and a mortgage in principle, so we started to look on Rightmove. When we saw the Harlow Green properties near the open countryside, we fell in love.”
Caroline and Colin secured an off plan two-bedroom house via shared ownership through Together Homes, part of Together Housing in Harlow Green. They worked with Debbie Hirst, Regional Sales Consultant for Together Homes to get the process moving and began to watch their house being built. Then COVID-19 stopped everything.
With the start of COVID restrictions and the impact on construction and the housing market, Caroline worried that everything would fall through, “With coronavirus everything was sent into a bit of a tailspin at first, but Debbie Hirst and her team worked really hard to make the whole process easier for us. Debbie was able to answer every question we had and made sure we moved into our dream home.
“In April 2021 we moved into our home and it was worth the wait. The house is beautiful, and the area is perfect for us. We have no intention of moving again.”
