Bright Sparks tackle housing issues

We teamed up with Great Places, Yorkshire Housing and Onward Homes for an innovation day called Bright Sparks.

Kicking off the event, which was inspired by a competition organised by the National Housing Federation, were two guest speakers; Corin Bell of Real Junk Food, and Greg Ashton of Reason Digital.

After some inspirational words, the 24 staff members split into groups of six to brainstorm solutions to the following challenges: homelessness, ageing population, employment and skills, environment, supply and digital.

Tenants were then invited to listen to the ideas and help shape them before the groups presented their concepts, Dragon’s Den style, to a panel, made up of the two guest speakers and Together Housing board member Darren Wild, as well as a board member from Great Places.

The winning team came up with the concept of “homes for life” to tackle the issue of supply. The idea is that the house can grow with your family and downsize accordingly so you never need to move home. The modular structure would enable you to bolt on bedrooms as you have children and when you no longer need them, the bedrooms can be moved elsewhere to avoid paying the bedroom tax.

Stephen Batley, Head of Business Improvement for Together Housing, said: “The idea of the event was to encourage collaborative working in the housing sector and to encourage staff to think differently to develop ideas that could make a real difference to people’s lives.
