Apprentice hopefuls get hands on at open day

Over 100 would-be plumbers, plasterers, gas technicians, marketeers and more from across Lancashire gathered in Blackburn to find out about apprentice opportunities at Together Housing Group.

The Apprenticeship Day featured staff from the following teams who were looking to recruit the brightest local talent:

  • ·         Repairs & Maintenance
  • ·         Sales & Marketing
  • ·         Tele-Care
  • ·         Newground ReUSE
  • ·         Newground WorkSmart

The event was also attended by local training and education partners including Blackburn College, Nelson & Colne College, Accrington & Rossendale College, Burnley College, Training 2000 and Dutton Fisher.

In addition to being able to meet current apprentices and talk to staff about the recruitment process and any apprenticeship prospects, the young hopefuls were able to have a go at practical demonstrations such as soldiering and plastering.

Lilli Smalley, 17, from Blackburn, is currently studying psychology, sociology and modern history but is keen to follow in the footsteps of her dad who is a builder.

She said: “I’m particularly interested in gas or plumbing but it has been great to come along and look at the other options available. The thought of doing something hands-on and getting out and about appeals to me much more than sitting in an office all day.

“Being able to come along and speak to people already working in these roles and having a go at practical demonstrations myself has just confirmed that this is what I want to do.”

Nigel Jones, HR Head of Operations at Together Housing, said: “Apprenticeships are a great way to get the qualifications and experience needed to start your career. It’s a real job, with real income but at the same time allows you to work towards a qualification that is nationally recognised.

“When people think of apprenticeships, especially in the housing sector, they often think of tradespeople but we offer opportunities in everything from joinery to sales and marketing. Often once people are in an organisation like Together Housing, which offers so many varied roles, people may even find themselves moving from one department to another.”
