Gas is a valuable natural resource that helps to cook food and keep us warm. But it’s also a potentially fatal element.

That’s why we carry out gas safety checks to ensure you gas supply is working safely and efficiently, as part of our legal duty to customers.

As well as explosions and fires, leaks from faulty gas appliances can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas which is very difficult to detect. You can’t see it, smell it or taste it. Carbon monoxide poisoning makes people very ill and can even cause death.

Every year in the UK, more than 200 people go to hospital with suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, which leads to around 50 deaths (source: NHS).

The Annual Gas Safety Check will keep you, your family and your neighbours safe.

Our Responsibilities

We have a legal responsibility to check and service all gas appliances in your home every 12 months. You must let our engineer into your home to do this work when requested.

We will:

  • Contact you when the annual gas safety check is due (if your home has a gas supply).
  • Check all gas appliances in your home for FREE at least once every 12 months using qualified engineers.
  • Visual checks will only be made to all appliances belonging to the tenant
  • Give you a copy of your landlord gas safety check certificate.

New Gas Safety Access Procedure

A new Gas Safety Access Procedure has been developed that will begin this autumn.

When your Annual Gas Safety Check is due, you will receive a letter with the date and time of the appointment.

Don’t worry you will have plenty of time to change the appointment if it isn’t convenient. Just give your Customer Service Centre a call to rearrange.

If you’re not in when the engineer calls, you might be charged for this missed appointment.

We will then try several times by letters and visits to arrange an appointment that is convenient for you.

If all our attempts to contact you to arrange the Gas Safety Check fail, a final request letter will be hand-delivered.

This will give you the date and time when we will use a locksmith to access the property and disconnect the gas supply.

You will be charged for the lock change, missed appointments and possibly any legal costs.

To avoid this cost and inconvenience, make sure you’re in for the Gas Safety Check, or contact us to arrange a convenient time.

If you smell gas or suspect a gas leak

  • Turn off the gas at your meter.
  • Open all windows and doors.
  • Put out all naked flames (do not smoke).
  • Do not use/touch electrical appliances or switches.
  • Call National Grid on 0800 111 999 before contacting us.
  • Leave the property if necessary
