Starts At Home

Starts at Home is a campaign by the National Housing Federation which celebrates supported housing and shares positive stories of people whose lives have been transformed. The unique benefits of supported housing are seen every day, from support for older people through independent living, to residents rebuilding their lives through specialist services.

Starts at Home day will take place on Friday 1st September, when we will celebrate the positive impact that supported housing has on people’s lives. Starts at Home aims to demonstrate the value of supported housing, covering a wide range of housing and care services. Independent Living Officer Jane Bush said that supported housing is more than just a home: “Supported housing is not just about providing homes for people, it’s about providing an environment where it’s fun, happy and everybody can come together.”

Together Housing offers a number of schemes to help a range of people, including housing with care, independent living and various specialist housing services. In Blackburn, our staff at Hollin Street are proud to provide supported housing for homeless families, with a supportive environment aiming to keep families together. Former residents have fond memories of their time: “Some of the best times of my life were had at Hollin Street.”

But it doesn’t stop there, we offer services beyond housing support from safeguarding to Telecare, a service which helps people to stay at home with the use of great technology. Tahir Idris, Telecare Coordinator, said Telecare allows vulnerable people to enjoy safe, independent living: “Telecare is designed to support independent living for as long as is possible, something that chimes with the aspirations of the wider public.”

Residents at Clement Court in Halifax recently enjoyed a seaside garden party – playing traditional seaside games and tucking into bags of chips and knickerbocker glories. Residents at Potters Place in Chesterfield celebrated their three year anniversary with a fundraising afternoon of games, allowing residents to come together to reflect on their experiences of supported housing.

We’re continuing to develop our supported housing and specialist services, with our newest scheme Riverside Heights, in Darwen, due to open in Spring 2018 offering 85 self-contained apartments to older people, allowing them to live independently for longer.
