Blackburn residents celebrate Starts at Home Day

Tenants at one of our Blackburn with Darwen supported housing schemes have been talking about the support they receive as part of events to mark Starts at Home Day.

Alison and Wendy, who have had to overcome a number of challenges in recent years, said that being able to live at the scheme meant they could live independently.

“Anywhere is better than being out on the street,” Alison says, “but it’s important that my children and me have our own space and we can be independent. Living in supported housing has given me this.”

Alison was speaking while taking part in a Paediatric First Aid Course organised by Newground Together, a charity that’s part of the Together Housing Group. While Alison and Wendy joined other local tenants in learning the basics of saving a life, their children visited Offshoots, an outdoor centre operated by the charity in the grounds of Towneley Park near Burnley. One of the children, who were trying fruit and building dens before cooking their own pizza, said it was a highlight of their school holiday: “I love being outdoors and I’m not sure what I’d be doing if I wasn’t here.”

The event is just one example of how different parts of Together Housing group work to support tenants and raise aspirations and skills in the community.
