Give your home a style makeover!

Give your home a style makeover!

A show home can provide a great opportunity for us to show residents the potential of some of our properties. We don’t invest a lot in show homes, but we do find that sometimes they help people imagine what they are able to do with the space in their home and how they would comfortably live there.

We asked interior designer Kelly Jones to decorate one of our flats, so people could see how a house could become a home. After two weeks of upcycling, stencilling and paint mixing, these rooms were given a modern and luxurious look.

Living room: Budget £200

The framed art on the wall is from a roll of wallpaper! Kelly turned around the advert inside these frames and cut her piece of wallpaper. She then placed it evenly on the white background to create a free handmade mount and stuck it in place with tape.

The corner table was plain wood so Kelly decided to do some stencilling. First she painted the entire table top black, she then created her pattern with masking tape and filled in the spaces with greys and yellows to fit her colour scheme.

Bedroom: Budget £150

Before the makeover the bedside tables and wardrobe were pine. Kelly mixed white and black paint to create this modern grey colour which makes the tables look brand new! Money was also saved by removing the handles and spray painting them champagne gold – no new handles needed. The lamps were also spray-painted champagne gold to tie in with the design theme.

The artwork above the bed was bought in clearance as it was damaged, so the price was much reduced. Many home makers avoid damaged items, but Kelly saw it as an opportunity to cover the damage with gold spray paint. The result is now an original piece of artwork that you would never know was damaged!

Study: Budget £150

This room is the smallest of the three rooms. By using bright colours, the space looks brighter and bigger. Kelly wanted this room to be fun and modern, to show how every inch of space can be used.

The feature wall for this room is not wallpaper – it’s handprinted paint! The design was cut out on a potato. First Kelly sampled it on a piece of paper to make sure it printed what she wanted. Then, when she was happy, she painted black paint onto the potato design and started stamping!

These drawers were originally pine. Black paint was used to give the drawers a fresh look with contrasting coral paint for the door handles. Then with a roll of wallpaper, each piece was measured to cover each drawer perfectly. She then cut them out with scissors and used spray adhesive to stick the wallpaper to the front of the drawers.
