A team of residents at Bakersfield Court won first place at the Mini Olympics in Rotherham.

Bakersfield Court was one of four extra care schemes from Rotherham to compete at the Rotherham United Community Sports Trust’s Mini Olympics at the New York stadium. Each team consisted of eight players that competed in games like skittles, bocha, target quiz and dominoes.

The Mini Olympics were organised by Rotherham United Community Sports Trust. This is a charity that aims to provide engaging health and education programmes that are socially inclusive. In the last year the Trust has delivered activities for over 61,000 participants.

As a part of its services, the Trust provides weekly exercise and game sessions for residents at Bakersfield Court. Over the six weeks before the games the teams used these sessions to train for the event. Their hard work paid off when they secured first place at the games.

The event aimed to be accessible for everyone. All the games were played whilst seated, allowing everyone, regardless of ability, to get involved. The games and training sessions are also a great opportunity for older people to socialise, not only with their neighbours during training, but with the wider community.

The organisers said that overall residents have really enjoyed taking part and they can’t wait until the next one!
