Stub it out: Fire safety at home

Candles and smoking could be the easiest way a fire could start in your home. Below is a video and some great tips to prevent a fire from candles and smoking.

Smoking

  • It is best to smoke outside and never in bed. This is because you could fall asleep and your bed could catch fire.
  • Take extra care if you smoke after taking prescription drugs, when you are tired or if you’ve been drinking. This is because you might fall asleep and set items around you on fire.
  • Stub cigarettes out properly and dispose of them safely in an ashtray and not a waste bin. Your ashtray should be in a safe place where it can’t tip over and it should be made of a material that doesn’t burn.
  • Make sure all lighters, matches and cigarettes are kept out of the reach of children.
  • Don’t leave a lit cigarette, cigar or pipe. They can easily fall over and start a fire.

Candles

  • You should make sure that all candles are secured in an official candle holder and that they are put in a safe place. A safe place should be out of reach of children and any pets and away from material that could easily catch fire like curtains.
  • Make sure you put candles out before leaving a room and you should double check that a candle is completely out before going to bed.
