Sliding Doors For All has attracted £9,652 from Newground Together but is one of five groups competing in the Granada region for £50,000 of National Lottery funding in the People’s Projects competition.

Sliding Doors currently run a thriving social group at Blackburn Rovers Blues Bar and Mill Hill community Centre which provides a rare opportunity for people with disability to get out, create friendships and participate in ‘normal’ life.

And thanks to the funding from Newground Together, there will be additional sessions, including one at Together Housing’s Gleneagles Court in Blackburn.

The prize money would be used to take this life-changing work to the next level and bring together two of society’s most isolated groups: people with disability and older people.

Founder of Sliding Doors, Julie Astley, said: “The project will give a sense of purpose and meaning to hundreds of vulnerable people.

“Currently, one in four people with a disability say they feel lonely most of the time and 10 per cent of older people say suffer from ‘intense’ loneliness.

“This project will allow us to give people the chance to play a real part in the community so we’re hoping to get as many people as possible to vote for us.”

Peter Jordan, Newground’s Communities Director, added: “This is a great project and is already helping lots of people.

“But with Julie’s enthusiasm and the additional funding from us she will be able to extend the offer to other groups.

“So we’re hoping as many as possible vote for her  project which is making a real difference.”

Sliding Doors will showcase their project, Open for All on Granada News at 6pm on Wednesday, March 22.

Voting is open at or those without internet access can send a postcard to “Freepost - The People’s Projects” stating name, address, telephone number and their vote for Open for All.  Voting closes at noon on Monday, April 3.
