ReUse to the Rescue!
ReUse to the Rescue!
Our furniture store, ReUse Together, lent a helping hand to families devastated by flooding over the Christmas period.
ReUse, based on Glenfield Park in Blackburn, has been able to help families re-furnish homes with low-cost replacements.
Staff took time out from their Christmas break to assist tenants and signpost them to other services.
Whalley residents have been able to get furniture, white goods, carpet tiles, laminate flooring and a host of other items.
Project co-coordinator, Sara Knagg, was inspired to help when she saw how Whalley was so badly hit: "It was obvious there were quite a number of properties that had lost a lot.
“I went down to the relief centre to see what I could do to help, firstly as a member of the public, but also knowing that we've got a lot of furniture here that could help re-stock people.
"Unfortunately, a lot of people weren't insured and they've lost the entire bottom of their house, which is sad the day after Christmas.
“We've been signposting here so they can replenish their homes or just have some temporary stock, while they save up to get other stuff."
She added: "Thinking about having to replenish your house, just after Christmas as well, particularly, after Christmas when people have already spent a lot. Then just having to think about buying something to sit on, we have options that people can use.
"It was devastating being in Whalley, looking at people who've lost their house through no fault of their own, to then find out that the loss assessors won’t be coming for two weeks or they're not insured - they were just in a bit of need and it's been nice help."
The offers of low cost alternatives have been well received: "We've been really well received by the residents, some of them are still a few weeks or maybe months away from being able to move into their properties,” Sara said. “But we're not going anywhere and this low cost furniture is low cost, it won't rocket back up.
"There were quite a few families who got hit hard. One little lad lost all his toys and some people had come back after being away over Christmas, to find their homes had been flooded - it's just devastating."
