7th October is #HousingDay – a national 24-hour social media event promoting the positive impact of social housing on thousands of people across the UK, hearing life-changing stories from residents, staff and landlords.
#HousingDay is an annual event that gives social housing a chance to shout about all its great work. Residents and staff are encouraged to share their stories with enthusiasm and pride. The theme this year is 'the importance of home'.
The coronavirus crisis has emphasised that everyone needs a safe and secure home. Not only do housing associations provide quality affordable housing, they also invest in the communities in which they operate by providing a wide range of services, including income and benefits advice; training and employment opportunities; support for young people and environmental projects.
Together Housing are urging the government to put social homes at the heart of its plan for social and economic recovery from the coronavirus crisis. We are supporting ‘Homes at the Heart’, a campaign and coalition, which is calling for a once-in-a-generation investment in social housing.
Steve Close, Chief Executive of Together Housing Group, said: “Investing in social housing will help the country recover from this crisis by boosting the economy, creating jobs and improving people’s lives when our nation needs it most. Without action, we are likely to see many peoples’ housing situations get much worse in the weeks, months and years ahead, as the economic impacts of the crisis are felt across the country.”
