Residents from the Beech Hill estate in Halifax came together at Beech Hill School at the weekend to mark the Great Get Together, on what would have been Jo Cox’s 45th birthday.

The family fun day was organised by Together Housing and Calderdale Council as part of the Calderdale Together Housing Investment Partnership. It was also supported by Rhodar, the partnership’s contractor which is currently demolishing the tower blocks on the estate.

The free event included an inflatable disco, a children’s entertainer, face painting, henna painting and a Punch and Judy show. It was one of a number of events which took place up and down the country in memory of MP Jo Cox, who was tragically murdered in her constituency of Batley and Spen in June 2016.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Resources, Cllr Jane Scullion, said: “The Great Get Together event brought the local residents of Beech Hill together to celebrate kindness, respect and all we have in common.

“As regeneration work at the estate continues, this well-attended event was a chance to show the fantastic community spirit of the area.”

Local resident Rifa Begum, who brought her three children to the event, said: “It was great to have a free event right on our doorstep to bring the community together. The kids really enjoyed the magician and balloon modelling and had a great time playing with their neighbours.”
