GEM programme kick starts Letting Officer’s career in housing

Together Housing’s partnership with the GEM programme has kick started a graduate’s career.

When Peter Gunning joined Together Housing in September 2018 as a Graduate Lettings Officer he also started the GEM programme.

The GEM programme is a graduate scheme established by the Charted Institute of Housing (CIH) and supported by Incommunities. The scheme is a 12 month programme which provides management and leadership training, with students working towards a Level 4 Certificate for the Housing Profession.

The programme claims that it is an “effective way to recruit and introduce graduates with an authentic passion for housing” with “over 80% of people who have completed the GEM programme remaining in the Housing sector.”

As a part of the GEM programme Peter has travelled to London, Glasgow and Belfast to attend sessions with housing agencies and politicians to discuss housing legislation throughout the UK and Ireland. These sessions also focused on ways to tackle current issues within the housing sector such as homelessness and how to prevent it. He has also attended development sessions about personal and professional development as well as leadership.

Throughout the course of the programme Peter has visited London, Belfast and Glasgow to attend sessions with housing agencies and politicians to discuss housing legislation within UK and Ireland.

Peter said: “As someone who came to Together Housing with hardly any knowledge of the housing sector, this programme has provided me with some amazing opportunities to learn and kick start my career in housing!”

The programme also included the opportunity to attend the CIH Housing conference 2019 which took place in Manchester. Here, he was able to attend speeches from the then Minister of State for Housing and Planning, Alok Sharma, TV architect George Clark, Shadow Secretary of State for Housing John Healey and the then Prime Minister, Theresa May.

Peter said: “the GEM programme has been an invaluable experience for me, and has given me a deep understanding of the issues affecting the housing sector.”
