Fire Safety - Smoke Alarms

The best and easiest way to protect you, your family and your home from a fire is to have a working smoke alarm fitted. The smoke alarm will sound and give you an early warning of a fire which gives you a chance to escape. A smoke alarm could save your life. Here are some top tips to make sure that your smoke alarm is in working order and what to do if it is not.

Test your smoke alarm once a week!

A smoke alarm can only save lives if it is working. Test your alarm once a week and offer to test elderly neighbours’ alarms too if they need help.

What should I do if my smoke alarm isn’t working?

If your smoke alarm is battery powered and it made no sound when you tested it then your alarm’s batteries need to be replaced. If your alarm is beeping, the batteries will also need replacing. Don’t remove the batteries just to stop the noise as this will stop your smoke alarm from working.

What should I do if my home doesn’t have a smoke alarm?

You should have a smoke alarm on every level of your home. If you realise you do not have one then you can contact us on 0300 555 5560 or request a repair through Your Account.

Keep your alarms clean

If your smoke alarm is surrounded or full of dust it may not detect smoke until it is too late or not work at all. Make sure you keep your smoke alarms clean and clear.
