Claims for Universal Credit have rocketed since the coronavirus outbreak. Many residents who haven’t claimed benefits before now need information about Universal Credit.

Our benefits advisors can provide residents with expert friendly advice. We can advise on how to claim, what to expect and how to get a payment advance while waiting 5 weeks for the first monthly Universal Credit.

Some residents have been surprised and relieved to discover they qualify for some Universal Credit while furloughed (wages paid by the Government), due to their reduced income. Others can be worse off by claiming Universal Credit and we can advise on the options available. Explaining the complicated rules and doing comparison calculations helps residents to make an informed choice and have more control over their money.

We’ve spoken to many residents who have lost out on some Universal Credit due to delays in claiming. For example, one resident expected a wage payment that didn’t come so later claimed Universal Credit, missing out on at least a week’s money for himself and for rent. Another resident struggled to make an online claim due to her limited English. With the high call volume, she couldn’t get through to the Universal Credit phone line to make her claim with an interpreter on the line.
