Darwen couple find new lease of life since moving home

A couple from Darwen say their quality of life has greatly improved since moving into Together Housing Association’s first Housing with Care scheme in Blackburn with Darwen.

Marilyn and David Wright, aged 74 and 75 respectively, downsized from a three-bedroom semi to a two-bedroom apartment at Riverside Heights, a purpose-built Together Housing Group scheme, last year and haven’t looked back since.

Riverside Heights offers the couple, who have five grandchildren and three great grandchildren, independent living with a community lifestyle.

Marilyn, who suffers from limited mobility following three operations on her back said: “I used to feel isolated where we lived before as I struggled to get in and out of the house because of the steps and after a few falls, I stopped going out on my own. But here I’m happy meeting new people, joining in activities and I’m getting out and about more.

David, who works as a school passenger assistant, added: “I have a lot of peace of mind as I know when I go out that Marilyn is safe. The staff are wonderful, especially the carers and if there is anything you need you only have to ask.”

Marilyn said: “David is a lot happier knowing there is somebody at the other end of a buzzer if I need anything while he’s out at work. He’s also come out of his shell more. I retire to bed quite early and David would just sit on his own and read a book but here he organises quizzes for the other residents, which keeps him busy in the evenings.

“I can’t stand long enough to cook so we go to the restaurant for lunch every day and always have a hot meal. It has been a blessing as I have been struggling to cook myself for several years now. It is great having this lovely restaurant.

“It certainly has been an ideal move, I don’t think we could go back to living how we were.”
