For Deborah Close, helping people when they’re struggling is at the heart of her job.

Deborah has worked with rent accounts for 20 years and now, as an Income Officer, she talks to residents about their options when their circumstances change. “Sometimes when people’s circumstances change, they get really worried and put off speaking to us,” said Deborah, “when they do finally speak to us many are surprised because there are options to support them that they didn’t know about before.”

With the current crisis, supporting people has become more important than ever. Deborah said; “Since the coronavirus crisis started, we have been in touch with more residents as their circumstances changed. The benefit system can be confusing and complex, especially if you have never claimed benefits before. I can help with benefits and can provide advice over the phone or refer people to our Benefit Advisors. People do feel reassured when they realise there is help.”

Deborah likes the fact that her job is very much about people. “My job is to help people when they are struggling, which has become more important than ever during these strange times. That’s where I get my job satisfaction. For a lot of people, it’s not that they don’t want to pay their rent, it’s that they can’t, and they don’t know where to turn. It’s nice to reassure people that there are options and support out there for them.”

Deborah has one piece of advice for residents; “Please get in touch if you think you are going to struggle to pay your rent. By talking to us we can discuss options and see how we can help, which is better than worrying about money and becoming too scared to contact us.”
