Believe in yourself
For Amjad Ali, boosting people’s confidence so they are ready to get back into work is what makes Newground Together’s employment and training schemes so worthwhile.
We spoke to Amjad Ali, a Community Employment Advisor at Newground Together, part of the Together Housing Group, about what being an employment advisor means and why he loves helping others into work and training.
“I became an employment advisor by chance. I was actually looking for work and a member of staff at the Jobcentre I was visiting at the time asked me to help translate for a customer,” said Amjad. “After I finished translating, the staff member advised me to apply for the jobs working with Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). After working several different roles within DWP, I realised I enjoyed the employment support role the most as I love to see people’s confidence grow and for them to meet their goals. Twenty plus years later and I am still working as an employment adviser.”
For Amjad and his colleagues, it’s about fully understanding a client and their individual challenges and opportunities. Amjad said: “When I meet a new client, I aim to understand fully their skills, qualifications, employment history and, most importantly, their motivations and barriers to employment. Then we will create an action plan of how we will get them back into work. I provide support for writing CVs, applying for jobs and with practising interview skills. Sometimes a client may not have worked or had an interview in a long time, practising these skills is important to building their confidence.”
“I also contact local employers to promote my clients to help fill their vacancies,” continued Amjad. “With each job we apply to I will make sure it is somewhere they could get to everyday and whether the actual role is a good match for them.”
Amjad’s support for clients doesn’t end when they gain work. “Once they start work, I keep in touch with clients for up to six months so I can support them through this change and help them resolve any problems or anxieties they face,” said Amjad.
Seeing a client develop their confidence is what motivates Amjad: “I love working in a fantastic team that really does put clients at the heart of everything we do. Many clients approach me with doubts about their own abilities and believing they can’t get a job. I love to see clients begin to believe in themselves as well as secure a job.”
