A Stitch in time

At the ReUse Centre in Blackburn’s Glenfield Park, the Thursday morning sewing club has become a lifeline for the people who attend.

Rita Jackson, who set up the club, did so after a period of illness and is helping people in a similar position stitch their lives together.

The club helps people learn new skills in sewing and craft making but also gives people recovering from serious illness a chance to get out of the house and meet new friends

Rita said: “I’ve been where these ladies are now and I know how dark it can be. But this club gives them a new focus.

“They can create some beautiful needlework but also meet new friends and make a new social circle.

“And we have people coming from all over the North West so I’m delighted to be able to help people.”

Another volunteer at the club said: “Last year I met Rita at one of her classes and she saved me, she’s fabulous. And now we’re the best of friends and we really love helping others through our craft clubs.”

The craft club runs every Thursday, there is a drop-in session in the morning and from 12pm onwards there is a paid class which costs just £1 and you take home whatever you make!
