Alica Harrison, one of our Advisors, explains how we can help tenants get back on track with their rent payments.
“I’m a Tenancy Sustainability Advisor at Together Housing. My work involves helping tenants who are in rent arrears or experiencing financial hardship to maximise their income and get back on track. I also assist vulnerable tenants who may benefit from referrals to external agencies such as drug and alcohol services and mental health teams.
It’s a cliché but it’s true - no case is exactly the same. There are always different reasons why a tenant has found themselves in a difficult position with the possibility of losing their home. Finding the best solution is always challenging, but rewarding when it saves a tenancy.
We’re able to get a tenant back on track with their rent accounts so they can keep their home. We do this by offering budgeting advice, referrals to external agencies such as StepChange to assist with debt and also by applying for discretionary housing payments to help tenants who are struggling with the effects of the bedroom tax. Sometimes, we can assist tenants to get furniture and white goods by applying for grants.
A typical referral will come from our Income Team. A tenant isn’t engaging with them and needs a home visit. We ring and text the tenant before we visit explaining who we are and what we can do to help. When we get in contact, we assess the tenant’s needs and put appropriate actions in place to make sure they can keep their tenancy.
If you are struggling to pay your rent but don’t know where to turn to for help, please make contact through your Customer Service Centre. Talk with your Income Officer about your circumstances and they will put in a referral to the Tenancy Sustainability Team.”
