Fully digital Universal Credit is being introduced in Wakefield from 28th November 2018. If you're on any of these benefits, you may, at some point, need to claim Universal Credit instead:

  • Income-based Jobseekers' Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support (IS)
  • Housing Benefit (HB)
  • Working Tax Credit (WTC)
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC)

How will I know when to claim Universal Credit?

When you have a change in circumstances that ends one of these 6 benefits and tax credits. If you still need benefits to live on or to help pay your rent, you will claim fully digital Universal Credit instead.

For example

  • You come off JSA and housing benefit due to finding work. A few months later, your work ends. You won't claim JSA and HB again but fully digital Universal Credit instead.
  • You're claiming as a couple and split up. Your new benefit claim will be for fully digital Universal Credit instead.

What is the fully digital service?

The fully digital service means your Universal Credit account will be online and you'll need to log into it regularly. All the information about your Universal Credit is on this account and you have an online journal where you, the Universal Credit service centre and the Jobcentre can communicate with each other.

The YouTube video 'Universal Credit online – service overview' shows you how to set up an account and how to use it.

What if I am already on Universal Credit?

You will need to transfer to fully digital Universal Credit at some point. We will contact you separately about this or you can contact us for more information.

How can I prepare?

Make sure you have an email address and a bank account. Talk to your Jobcentre work coach if you have one.

We can advise you about Universal Credit and any other benefits. Please contact our customer services and ask to be referred to a Welfare Benefits Advisor or contact us via our website.
