Getting ready for Universal Credit

Universal Credit is a benefit that supports you if you’re working and on a low income, or if you're out of work. If you claim Universal Credit there are some important things you need to know to get ready.

Our new video is here to help you as you prepare for Universal Credit.

You’ll need regular access to the internet so you can make your claim and update your online journal throughout your claim. To claim online you will need a lot of information; this includes your National Insurance Number, your rent details, your landlord’s address, and details of any earnings and childcare costs. It’s important you make your online claim as soon as possible, so having all this information to hand is essential.

You will be responsible for paying your own rent and council tax, along with other household bills from your monthly Universal Credit payment. There will be up to five weeks wait for your first Universal Credit payment, but you can ask at the Jobcentre or apply online for an advance payment to help you manage. The advance payment will then be paid back from your ongoing monthly universal credit.

There are many ways to pay your rent; Universal Credit is paid monthly, so a monthly direct debit may work for you. You can also pay your rent at a local PayPoint outlet, by using the AllPay website, or by our automated telephone service - available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
