Back to school for apprentices

Back to school for apprentices

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, an apprentice from one of Blackburn’s leading employers has returned to her old school to highlight the benefits of earning while you learn.

Maisie Roberts, 16, joined Together Housing Group as an Organisational Development Apprentice after being inspired by a talk at her school by apprentices from the housing association. Now she has returned to Our Lady & St John Catholic College to share her own experiences with pupils, in a bid to encourage others to consider an apprenticeship.

Maisie said: “When people think of apprenticeships, especially in the housing sector, they often think of tradespeople but Together Housing offers opportunities in everything from plumbing and plastering to sales and marketing.”

Maisie was joined by Gas Engineer Apprentice Nathan Milligan, who said: “I came to apprenticeships later in life, but I think they’re the best way to learn while you earn. Since joining nearly two years ago, I’ve learned new skills and gained experience in different trades including gas, plumbing and electrical.”

Maisie added: “Although it doesn’t feel long since I left, it was nice to go back and see so many familiar faces.  I hope that myself and Nathan have inspired some of the pupils to consider an apprenticeship and hopefully look at what Together Housing has to offer.”

Andrew Larkin, Careers/Personal Development Lead at Our Lady & St John Catholic College, said “We’ve been working in partnership with Together Housing for several years to promote training and employment opportunities for pupils who are considering their career options. The event went well and we look forward to some of our pupils attending the forthcoming apprenticeship open day in Blackburn.”

Nigel Jones, Assistant Director of HR and Organisational Development at Together Housing, added: “Being able to speak to like-minded people who were in their position just a year ago can really enable pupils to relate and gain an honest insight into apprenticeships to help them decide if it is for them.”

Maisie and Nathan are one of 36 apprentices Together Housing took on last year.
