Mark Stone, 43, recently became unemployed and struggled to control his financial situation. This heavily impacted his wellbeing and confidence and he wanted to find work in order to feel better overall.
This is when Mark received a text from us about More Positive Together (MPT), an employment project run by Newground Together, part of Together Housing Group.
Mark met Karen Marsden, an MPT mentor. Together they regularly discussed possibilities to improve Mark’s financial situation as well as his mental health and wellbeing. Karen has a good knowledge of organisations that she could refer Mark to for advice and support.
Karen and Mark contacted StepChange, a Debt Charity that provides free financial advice. A StepChange advisor discussed with Mark the options he could take to resolve his debt and from this Mark decided that a debt relief order was his best option. Karen helped Mark fill out the application and apply to a charity to cover the administration fees.
Karen also put Mark in touch with other organisations that could help with Mark’s physical and mental wellbeing. A wellbeing officer at Active Lancashire recommended Creative Football and through this Mark was able to find a wide variety of activities to help his wellbeing. This included football sessions and talking therapy group sessions.
With a weight lifted off his shoulders, Mark wanted to gain some work experience to build his confidence back up. Now that Mark was in contact with Creative Football, they were able to help him find a part-time position as a COVID marshal. Mark now works one-day a week at his local test centre.
Mark said, “The work has been good, and it has helped me get back on my feet. I feel lot more confident now.”
Karen said, “I am glad to see Mark regaining his confidence. I think he can only go onwards and upwards with a lot of weight lifted off his shoulders!”
Mark went on to say, “I definitely feel like I am in a better place now. I’m not entirely where I want to be, but now I know I can keep working at it. I am taking everything a day at the time and I think now if a big change happened in my life, I would be more prepared to take it on.”
